12 G 2 Anita
A Storied 12 Metre Yacht
1938–1947: Origins
Commissioned by margarine manufacturer Walter Rau, Anita was built by Abeking & Rasmussen in 1938 as yard number 3241. One of three 12 Metres constructed by the yard that year, she was the sister ship to Inga. With a hull of tabasco mahogany over steel frames and no engine installed, Anita was designed purely for racing. After WWII, her interior was fully rebuilt by her original builders.
Home Port: Mecklenburg and Warnemünde
1948–1953: Change and Transition
Ownership between 1948 and 1950 is unclear, but in 1951 Anita was transferred to Mr. Paulsen, a relative of the Rau family. He converted her rig to a yawl.
1954–1960: For Sale
During this period, Anita was listed for sale at the Abeking & Rasmussen yard.
1961–1964: Revival with SKO
A group led by Jellrich Rassau (then Commodore of the Segelkameradschaft Ostsee), along with Alois Kranz and August Schulte, purchased Anita and founded the “Friends of the Yacht” group. The initiative was a resounding success—eventually growing to over 400 members.
Her rig was further modified to a yawl, and her interior was updated for cruising.
1965–Present: Bluewater Voyages
Under the SKO burgee and homeported in Glückstadt, Anita has sailed extensively across bluewater routes. Highlights include an Atlantic crossing in 1992 and voyages to the Azores, Iceland, Canada, Madeira, Spitsbergen, and New York. Remarkably, she continued to sail without an engine, relying on wind and an electric generator alone.
2011: Major Refit
A comprehensive restoration was undertaken at the Nils Anderson & Jan Skibstrub shipyard in Gilleleje, Denmark. The project included:
Restoration of hull and frames
New cockpit layout
Modern rigging
New engine installation
Cost: $250,000
A return to her original rig design was projected within two years.
