12 I 10 Azzurra III

Challenger in the 1987 Louis Vuitton Cup

Launched in 1986, Azzurra III (I-10) was built to compete under the International Third Rule for the 1987 America’s Cup. Commissioned by the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda (YCCS), which served as Challenger of Record, the yacht was part of a bold Italian campaign following the success of Azzurra I in 1983.

To strengthen their chances, YCCS ordered three additional boats:

  • Azzurra II (I-8)

  • Azzurra III (I-10)

  • Azzurra IV (I-11)

From this fleet, Azzurra III (I-10) was selected as the official challenger for the Louis Vuitton Cup. Despite high expectations, she finished a disappointing 11th after Round Robin 3 of the challenger series.

Return to Italy & Restoration

February 1, 2022
After 35 years abroad, Azzurra III (I-10) returned to Italy under the care of new owner Nicola Vecchiola. She is currently undergoing a complete refit in the Marche region, with an anticipated completion date of April 2025.

The restoration is being overseen by A. Vallicelli & Co., the original yacht design studio responsible for all of the Azzurra 12mR yachts. This project marks a significant revival of an iconic chapter in Italian sailing history.
