Eileen 12 E 21

Ownership History and Restoration Timeline

Launched in 1938 and built to the International Third Rule, Eileen is a Scandinavian C/R Twelve—a class designation used for 12 Metre yachts built to the International Rule but not specifically intended for America's Cup racing. These yachts were identified by the "E" sail number on the mainsail.

1938–1948: Einmar Stange (Oslo, Norway)

Commissioned and first owned by Einmar Stange, Eileen was homeported in Oslo. As a C/R Twelve, she reflected Norway’s strong tradition of cruiser-racer yacht design—robust vessels built for performance but often sailed privately rather than on the international racing circuit.

1949–1958: Niels Onstad

Under new ownership by Norwegian shipping magnate Niels Onstad, Eileen continued to sail in Scandinavian waters. During this time, she was possibly used or chartered by Sonja Henie, the world-famous Olympic figure skater and Hollywood actress.

1958–1969: Possibly Still Owned by Niels Onstad

Records from this period are unclear. It is possible that Onstad retained ownership during this time, though specific details are not confirmed.

1970–1985: Unknown Ownership

Following the death of Sonja Henie, Eileen was sold in Sweden. During this period, she was converted from her original configuration to a ketch rig, marking a significant departure from her classic 12mR design.

1985–1993: Erling Storm (Oslo, Norway)

Norwegian owner Erling Storm undertook a restoration that returned Eileen to sailing condition for use in charter service. Her homeport once again became Oslo.

1993–1999: Paul van der Bijl (Cogolin, France)

A major restoration was carried out under the direction of Dutch naval architect Cees van Tongeren of the Van de Stadt design firm. During this period, Eileen was returned to her original C/R Twelve configuration, with updates to her interior and rigging.

2000–2006: Rick Langlaan (Saint-Tropez, France)

Eileen was actively maintained and sailed from Saint-Tropez. Unfortunately, in 2006, a fire destroyed much of her interior.

2006–circa 2020: Marie and Jérôme Borie (Marseille, France)

Under new ownership, Eileen underwent another restoration—this time with a focus on performance sailing rather than cruising comfort. Her interior was redesigned to support vintage regatta racing.

circa 2020–2022: Laetitia Morand-Monteil and Associates (La Ciotat, France)

Now based in La Ciotat, Eileen remains in excellent condition and is actively campaigned in the 12mR Vintage Division, participating in classic Mediterranean regattas.
