Nyala 12 US 12
Design & Build
Nyala (US-12) was designed by Olin J. Stephens of Sparkman & Stephens and launched in 1938 by Henry B. Nevins, Inc. on City Island, New York. She was commissioned by Standard Oil president Frederick T. Bedford, who presented the yacht as a wedding gift to his granddaughter Lucy when she married celebrated sailor Briggs Cunningham. At the time of her debut, Nyala incorporated several innovations, including the use of grinders for trimming the Genoa, which set her apart as a technologically advanced racing yacht.
Racing Career
From the moment she hit the water in 1938, Nyala made an impression by winning regattas and demonstrating her speed and balance. Over time, her reputation as one of the most competitive Twelves of her generation only grew. Her sleek lines and powerful sail plan made her a formidable force on the racecourse. After decades of racing, Nyala eventually came into the hands of Patrizio Bertelli, head of the Prada/Luna Rossa syndicate, who saw the potential for a second life in competition.
Restoration
In the mid-1990s, Bertelli commissioned a complete restoration of Nyala at Cantiere dell’Argentario in Italy. The project became one of the most celebrated restorations of a 12 Metre, bringing the yacht back to her original form while preserving historical accuracy. The work included rebuilding her structure, reconfiguring her systems for competitive sailing, and returning her finish to the high standards of classic yacht craftsmanship. When she returned to the water, Nyala was not only a museum-quality restoration but also a world-class racing yacht once again.
Championship Success
Nyala’s rebirth was followed by a string of major successes on the world stage. In 2008, she won the 12 Metre World Championship in Flensburg. In 2009, she added another victory at the Pre-Worlds. By 2014, she had captured yet another world title in Barcelona’s Vintage Division. Most recently, in 2019, Nyala dominated the World Championship in Newport, Rhode Island, securing victory in the Vintage Division under the helm of Mauro Pelaschier. These wins established Nyala as one of the most successful restored Twelves competing today.
Legacy
As a pre-World War II 12 Metre, Nyala represents one of the finest examples of the golden era of yacht design. She continues to sail and race at the highest level, blending history, authenticity, and performance. Her victories in the modern era highlight both the enduring brilliance of Olin Stephens’ design and the dedication of her restorers and owners. Today, Nyala remains a jewel of the international 12 Metre fleet, celebrated wherever she competes.
